BA in Theatre

Loyola University Chicago — Chicago, IL

BATheatre (General)Chicago, IL

About this program

Loyola University Chicago's Bachelor of Arts in Theatre emphasizes a liberal arts approach to theatre education, preparing students for careers across all aspects of the industry—performance, directing, design, technology, management, dramaturgy, and playwriting. By offering a BA rather than a BFA, the program prioritizes interdisciplinary study, fostering adaptable and well-rounded theatre artists who can collaborate across disciplines. The curriculum is organized into three core areas: Performance and Directing; History, Literature and Criticism of the Theatre; and Theatre Design and Technology. Production is integral to the program's educational mission. Students participate in an active production program as actors, directors, designers, dramaturges, and playwrights, with opportunities ranging from faculty-directed plays and musicals to student-generated work, experimental projects, and staged readings. The program also features showcases for new students, musical theatre minors, playwrights, and directors, allowing students to work immediately and consistently in production. Located in Chicago's thriving theatre community, the program leverages its geographic advantage through internship and apprenticeship opportunities at professional theatres around the city. The faculty of eight comprises professional actors, directors, dramaturges, and designers who mentor students as they gain real-world experience. Loyola is one of eight NAST-accredited institutions in Illinois and the only one in the Chicago metropolitan area, and is a member of the League of Chicago Theatres and the Theatre Communications Group.
