About this program
Kenyon College's BA in Music is open to any student at any level of experience — 'The majority of those taking individual lessons at Kenyon begin without formal study before college.' NO AUDITION required for program admission. CURRICULUM: Music theory (placement exam at Orientation for course placement only); music history; applied lessons (Levels I–IV; any student begins at Level I); ensemble participation; Senior Capstone. APPLIED LESSONS: 25- or 50-minute lessons at Levels I–III; Level IV: 50 or 100 minutes. Open to all students; taken for credit or audit. Applied music fees waived when required for major or minor. ~1 in 4 Kenyon students participate. SENIOR CAPSTONE: Research paper + independent research/performance project + oral defense. Project options: research paper (~40 pages); composition (15+ min); recital (50–60 min on major instrument with 10+ page paper); lecture-recital (50–60 min); ensemble presentation (~25 min). Level IV standing required before giving a department-sponsored recital.
