BA in Theatre Studies
Furman University — Greenville, SC
About this program
Furman University's Theatre Arts programme offers two distinct BA options and a Musical Theatre Interdisciplinary Minor. BA IN THEATRE ARTS: 'By providing extensive onstage and offstage training, the Theatre Arts program transforms theatre students into theatre artists.' Cross-trained in every aspect of theatre: lighting and sound design; acting; directing; set design; costumes; promotion; stage management. BA IN THEATRE STUDIES: A more scholarly approach to theatre — for students interested in criticism, history, theory, and research-based study of theatre. PROGRAMME FLEXIBILITY: 'At most schools, you have to commit to a curriculum as a freshman even if you're not sure what you want to do. At Furman, you have options. If you're not ready to commit to a major in theatre arts as a freshman, you can choose a different path. Take a few courses in our program and other disciplines, and find out what really appeals to you. When you determine theatre is the right fit, you can begin our program as a sophomore—and still be on schedule to graduate in four years. You can even double major.' MUSICAL THEATRE INTERDISCIPLINARY MINOR: Cultivates students 'actively engaged in honing their craft through Dance, Theatre, and Voice training.' Available as a stand-alone minor alongside any major. PRODUCTION SEASON: Four Main Stage performances each year (a wide range: comedy to tragedy; musical to non-musical) plus numerous smaller student-produced experiences. CROSS-TRAINING PHILOSOPHY: 'Setting you up for success after graduation by making sure each student is cross-trained in every aspect of theatre.' ALL students work in design, direction, performance, and production regardless of their specific interest. GREENVILLE PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS: 'Students can get what they need to succeed in our department using this tool.' Internship opportunities with multiple operating Greenville theatres. Greenville has a thriving professional arts community. STUDY ABROAD: Accademia dell'Arte (Arezzo, Italy): Study abroad with professors; collaboration with music students. British Isles: Study at Shakespeare's birthplace; attend Royal Shakespeare Company productions. CAMPUS CULTURE: 'Even when we're not working on a play or project, you'll find students mingling in our facilities, gathering in our scene shop for one of our grand traditions: our morning game of darts.'
