About this program

Furman University's Department of Music has been accredited by NASM since 1938 — one of the longest-standing NASM accreditations among liberal arts colleges in the country. The department is recognized as 'one of the best and most comprehensive in the nation among liberal arts colleges.' FIVE DEGREE Programs: Visit furman.edu/academics/music for the current list of degree programs (which may include options in music performance, music education, music composition, and related areas). PERFORMANCE ENVIRONMENT: 260+ events offered year-round. 'With over 260 events typically offered year-round, Furman is a vibrant part of both the Furman and Greenville music scene.' Facilities include 'first-rate performance and classroom facilities' — from solo recitals to large oratorios, recording grad school auditions to researching topics from the nation's top research music libraries. INTENTIONALLY SMALL STUDIOS: 'In Furman's intentionally small studios, faculty are free to mentor, help you advance, assist you in exploring the right repertoire, and are integral to your overall growth as a musician.' MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED THROUGH AUDITION: Furman Music Scholarships: $1,000-$15,000 per year, renewable for up to 4 years. Herring Music Fellowships (Gordon Herring '65 and Sarah Herring '66): $5,000-$25,000 per year, renewable for up to 4 years. 'Awarded to exceptionally high-achieving and talented student scholar-musicians.' Several awarded annually. Awarded IN ADDITION to Bell Tower Scholarships (merit-based) and Financial Aid (need-based). Presidential Music Scholarship: 'Furman's most prestigious talent-based award.' Also funded by Gordon and Sarah Herring. All three scholarship categories may be awarded to students who major in ANY discipline — not just music majors. AUDITION PROCESS: Step 1: Apply to Furman University first. Step 2: After submitting admissions application, receive confirmation email with link to Online Status Page. Step 3: Find audition registration form on the Online Status Page. Step 4: Attend one of 4 in-person audition weekends (check furman.edu for current dates). IMPORTANT: Recommendations are determined by BOTH quality of audition AND core needs of the music program. ACCADEMIA DELL'ARTE (AREZZO, ITALY): Furman music students may spend a semester studying at the Accademia dell'Arte in Arezzo, Italy — a unique collaboration between Furman and a prestigious Italian arts institution. Music students participate in 'Movement for Musicians' sessions taught by Accademia theatre faculty, chamber music performances, and solo recitals in local venues in Florence. 'Regular concert attendance in Florence, overnight excursions, along with independent travel opportunities during a week-long fall break give you ample opportunity to experience the cultural life of Western Europe.' MayX 'OPERA OVERLOAD': A May Experience short course splitting time between Greenville, SC and New York City. Students explore opera, its history in the United States (with focus on the Metropolitan Opera as an institution), and related topics including elitism, racism, and issues of power and sexuality in opera.
