Francis Marion University's Department of Fine Arts offers a BA in Theatre Arts with NAST accreditation — National accreditation by NAST 'gives Francis Marion University students majoring in theatre performance or theatrical design easier access to graduate and professional programs in parts of the country outside the region already aware of the program's reputation for excellence.' THEATRE PROGRAMME MISSION: 'To prepare students for graduate studies in the major, for entering professional training programs, or for entering professions that require creative thinking and artistic expression.' TWO SPECIALTIES: Performance Specialty: acting and directing; preparation for professional acting, directing, and graduate study. Design/Technology Specialty: scenery, lighting, costuming, and stagecraft; preparation for professional design/technical theatre careers. LIFE SKILLS DEVELOPED: 'self-discipline, personal responsibility, and organization; and the ability to communicate and problem solve on a professional level.' UNIVERSITY THEATRE PRODUCTIONS: 'provide a laboratory for students to hone their performance and stagecraft skills.' VOCAL ENSEMBLES (all open to general public; auditions required for some): University Concert Choir (35-45 members; open to all students; performed with Florence Symphony Orchestra; choral-orchestral works including Beethoven Ninth Symphony; also performed in Vienna, Austria, and on a cruise to the Bahamas). Cut Time (formerly Show Chorus) — vocal show ensemble. Voice Collective — small, audition-only vocal group performing throughout the region. THEATRE FACILITIES: FMU Fine Arts Theatre: 255 fixed seats (rear tier) + 100 pivoting front tier = up to 355 total. Versatile: converts from proscenium to thrust stage in minutes (front tier has air casters; elevates to stage floor level for thrust). 26-line counterweight fly system. Flexible lighting grid 'net' and catwalk. Permanent proscenium opening 18' high x 36' wide. 18 drafting stations in design studio. Make-up studio. FMU Performing Arts Center (downtown Florence): 850-seat theatre + 100-seat experimental theatre + BB&T Amphitheatre (500 patrons). Academic wing with classrooms, performance labs, practice rooms. Designed by Malcolm Holzman FAIA (Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture, NYC). 'Superior acoustics that adapt to individual performance needs.' AUDITIONS FOR PRODUCTIONS: Open to all FMU students. Voice Collective — audition-only vocal group (singing audition or audition materials provided).
