Florida A&M University (FAMU) is a historically Black university (HBCU) founded in 1887, part of the State University System of Florida, located in Tallahassee. The Department of Music is NASM-accredited. 'The mission of the Florida A&M University Department of Music is to provide the highest quality of music at the undergraduate level for music majors embarking on careers as teachers, scholars, performers, or composers.' AUDITION REQUIREMENT: All music majors must meet the minimum institutional admissions requirements AND have at least 3 years of preparation on their principal applied instrument and some preparation on piano. Competence in music performance and knowledge must be demonstrated during entrance examinations that determine placement in applied music and theory courses. Transfer credits are subject to validation by examination. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS BY LEVEL: LOWER-LEVEL: 6 major scales with arpeggios. Percussion: Xylophone (scales); Snare Drum (rudiments). Piano: 2 octaves hands together. Chromatic scale: full range of instrument (or one octave for voice). Instrumental: Two contrasting solos/etudes — one slow/lyrical, one technical; Grade 4+ on FBA list (or equivalent state festival list). Voice: Perform an Art song (e.g. Pathways of Song, Spirituals of H.T. Burleigh) + one song of choice. Vocal Jazz: Perform three jazz standards (accompanist provided for on-campus auditions, or bring own accompanying track). UPPER-LEVEL: 8 major scales with arpeggios + 2 minor scales. Percussion: Xylophone (scales); Snare Drum (rudiments). Piano: 2 octaves hands together. Chromatic scale: full range. Instrumental: Two contrasting solos Grade 4+ FBA; Percussion must also prepare etude/solo on snare drum, xylophone, and timpani. Voice: Two contrasting art songs + one song of choice. Vocal Jazz: Three jazz standards. ADVANCED: All major scales with arpeggios + 4 minor scales. Chromatic scale: full range. Instrumental: Two contrasting solos Grade 5+ FBA. Voice: Two contrasting art songs (from 24 Italian Arias [G. Schirmer]; Favorite French Art Songs; Spiritual-Folk Songs) + one song of choice. Vocal Jazz: Three jazz standards. KEY ENSEMBLES: Concert Choir — Director: Darryl Tookes (darryl.tookes@famu.edu); known for diverse repertoire spanning classical, jazz, contemporary, spiritual, gospel, and multicultural choral genres. Rattler Marching Band — iconic HBCU marching band tradition. Orchestra — Director: Dr. Mark Butler. Various chamber and vocal ensembles. MUSIC INDUSTRY TRACK: Students can pursue careers as producers, artists, composers, engineers, label executives, managers, music publishers, and in all areas of the music industry.
