About this program
Florida A&M University's theatre programme is part of the Department of Visual Arts, Humanities, and Theatre within the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. No audition is required for program admission. 'The theatre program offers two degree options: the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science.' BA IN THEATRE (Theatre Performance Track): Prepares students for graduate study or entry-level opportunities in theatre through the Theatre Performance track. 'Most theatre majors receive the Bachelor of Arts degree.' BS IN THEATRE: Available to students who concentrate in: Design — scenic, lighting, costume, sound design for the stage. Technical Theatre — stagecraft, rigging, scenic construction, technical direction. Theatre Management — production management, arts administration, marketing, front-of-house. Students who have special concentration interests 'will be advised of specific courses and electives to take and be mentored by faculty in the area of interest throughout their university tenure.' THE ESSENTIAL THEATRE: FAMU's pre-professional theatre training program. 'The Essential Theatre maintains its dedication to developing a competitive and quality theatre program that provides the student with pre-professional training achieved through classroom activities and practical production experiences.' Primary aim: 'to provide undergraduate students with the well-rounded formal preparation necessary for advanced academic or professional study and to expose the student body, the Tallahassee community, and surrounding areas to experiences in the arts.' PERFORMANCE VENUES: Charles Winter Wood Theatre (Edmonds Stage) — main stage; most mainstage productions. Seabrook Auditorium — for special productions and larger-scale events. IRENE C. EDMONDS YOUTH THEATRE (ICEYT): Since 1997, a creative force for children's theatre in Tallahassee; Young Thespians program. SENIOR SHOWCASE: The Essential Theatre Senior Showcase presents scenes and monologues to the community; graduating seniors create personal websites and resumes as career launch materials.
