About this program
Emporia State University began producing theatre in 1913 — making it one of the oldest theatre programmes in the country. The School of Visual + Performing Arts offers three theatre degrees. ALL three degrees require production participation every semester: students must audition for productions and contribute either in the cast or on a crew each semester (provided they meet academic eligibility standards). THREE DEGREE OPTIONS: BFA in Theatre (Performance Focus) — 'rigorous concentrated study'; audition required for programme admission; designed for students committed to a professional performance career or graduate study in theatre; the most intensive pathway. BA in Theatre — no audition required for programme admission; 'rigorous but allows more flexibility in course scheduling and elective options'; can be paired with a secondary field of interest (fine art, history, psychology, etc.); appropriate for graduate work in theatre or theatre-related fields (arts administration, law, public relations, ministry). BSE in Speech and Theatre — prepares to teach speech, theatre, debate, forensics, and radio/television in grades 6-12 in Kansas. ALL DEGREES REQUIRE: Contributing to all productions each semester, either as actor or crew member, provided academic eligibility standards are met. Theatre Guild Scholarships — awarded fall semester; incoming first-year and transfer students particularly encouraged to apply.
