About this program
Emory University's BA in Theater Studies requires no audition for programme admission. The Department of Theater and Dance operates two autonomous programs — Theater Studies and Dance — within the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. OPTIONAL SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS (NOT required for admission; used for admissions feedback only; do NOT affect the admission decision): Acting: 2-minute video of two contrasting monologues, uploaded as an unlisted YouTube link. Technical theater, design, or directing: portfolio or link to website (equivalent of 3 pages; must include a resume). IMPORTANT: Theater Studies faculty make NO admissions decisions. Supplemental materials are forwarded to the admissions committee for feedback only. ACTING FOCUS: BA students who wish to focus in acting take a sequence of acting courses (THEA 120 Acting: Fundamentals; THEA 223 Voice and Diction; THEA 224 Movement for the Actor; THEA 321 Acting: Advanced Scene Work; THEA 328 The Business of Acting). Students with an Acting Focus MUST audition for Theater Emory roles and perform them as opportunity permits. THEATER EMORY: Producing affiliate of Theater Studies; offers Fall and Spring productions primarily using student actors; non-union professional actors occasionally invited for appropriate roles. STUDENT GROUPS: BlueJay Theatre Collective (founded 2023); emShakes Theatre Co. (Shakespeare and classics with a twist); Kidding Around (TYA and intergenerational); Mercutio Troupe (founded 1972; formerly all-female Shakespeare; now focused on political theatre); RareWorks Theatre Company (new works and underrepresented plays); CHUANG Stage residency (Boston's Asian American theatre company at Boston Center for the Arts — unique Emory affiliation). RECENT GRADUATES: Work at Pew Research Center; Baltimore Center State; The Shakespeare Tavern; St. James Theatre London; Google; Emory University Center for Creativity and Arts.
