About this program

Elmhurst University's Department of Music offers multiple music degrees. ALL music majors must audition for acceptance. 'Admission to any degree program in the music department is dependent upon successful completion of an audition interview with members of the music department faculty. This audition interview also serves as a screening procedure for music scholarship awards.' NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED JAZZ FACULTY: Full of national recording artists and award winners. Performing ensembles have recently performed in California, Canada, New York City, and Europe. Ensembles have performed at Carnegie Hall, Ravinia Festival, and Orchestra Hall, and with performers such as Andrea Bocelli, The Manhattan Transfer, Bobby McFerrin, and Doc Severinsen. Ensembles perform exclusively on Gretsch drum sets. DEGREE OPTIONS (all require audition): BM in Music Performance — continuance jury at end of sophomore year (or first semester for transfers); junior and senior recitals required; must maintain 2.5 GPA; 8 terms of applied lessons on major instrument/voice. BA in Music — concentrations: Individual (specialized electives + senior project); Music Business; Music Education; Jazz Studies; other interdisciplinary. BS in Music Business — note: only requires MUS 135, 136, and 344 (not full theory sequence). ALL MUSIC MAJORS SHARE: MUS 100 Concert Attendance each term (with or without credit). MUS 130, 131, 132, 133, 135, 136, 235, 236, 343, and 344 required (exception: BS Music Business). Minimum 6 terms of applied music lessons on major instrument/voice. Must maintain membership in band, choir, or orchestra while full-time music major. Jazz Band may substitute after 4 terms of choir, band, or orchestra. AUDITION DAY REQUIREMENTS: Bring four copies of each piece of music — distributed to faculty panel. Accompanist: complimentary accompanist provided if requested no later than 3 weeks prior; contact Tim Ahlberg (630-617-3309). After audition: complete Music Theory Assessment (assessment only; has NO connection to acceptance or rejection). After audition: brief interview with Director of Music Admissions and faculty.
