BS in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre)
East Central University — Ada, OK
About this program
East Central University's Department of Performing Arts is housed in the Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center — an 82,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility that won an Outstanding Design award from American School & University (2010 Interiors showcase) and serves as the cultural hub for an 18-county region of southeastern Oklahoma. Chair: Dr. Nicholaus Meyers (nmeyers@ecok.edu; 580-559-5390). THEATRE CONCENTRATION: Prepares students for acting, technical theatre, dramatic arts, and theatre management. Requires study in all aspects of theatre — performers also work in technical theatre; technical students also step onstage. Creates a teamwork culture. Also prepares students for graduate study in Theatre. MUSICAL THEATRE CONCENTRATION: Develops skills and professional attitudes in both theoretical and practical aspects of musical theatre performance — combining acting, voice, and movement. Provides minimal study in technical theatre; not designed to prepare technicians. NOTE: Dance Minor is required for students in the Musical Theatre Concentration. Students seeking technical theatre training should consider the Theatre Concentration instead. PRODUCTION: Four main productions per year + active studio theatre season. All students participate in production practicum courses from day one. Showtime show choir provides additional cross-disciplinary performance opportunities. KCACTF participation provides regional professional visibility. FACILITIES — Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center: Ataloa Theatre — 1,086-seat proscenium; automated orchestra pit (lowered for musicals/dance; lifted to stage level for concerts/speaking events); floor and balcony seating. Chalmers Herman Theatre — 200-seat flexible studio; multiple configurations (proscenium, thrust, traverse, arena, L-shaped, dinner theatre). David A. and Alma R. Lockmiller Grand Lobby (42-foot-tall ceiling); Choral Hall (Wenger choir risers; unique acoustic ceiling); Edna Mae Query Cooley Costume Shop; Peshehonoff Scene Shop; Recording Studio; 25 classrooms; three computer labs; Dr. Arthur W. Kennedy Band Room; William C. Thrash Video Studio (first true HDTV studio in southeastern Oklahoma). SCHOLARSHIPS: Elizabeth Blakesly Scholarship (Art, Theatre, or Vocal Music; minimum 3.0 GPA); multiple endowed scholarships — see ecok.edu/foundation.
