About this program
ECU's Department of Performing Arts offers the BS in Music with five concentrations. Chair: Dr. Nicholaus Meyers (nmeyers@ecok.edu; 580-559-5390). Faculty include: Dr. Nicholaus Meyers (Director of Bands and Percussion); Farren Rowan (Staff Accompanist, Music Education, Piano); Melody Baggech (Soprano); Doug Laramore (Trumpet). Additional applied faculty in voice, piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. FIVE CONCENTRATIONS: 1. Instrumental Music — performance focus; prepares for professional instrumental performance career. 2. Instrumental Music Teacher Certification — leads to Oklahoma K–12 teaching licensure in instrumental music. 3. Vocal Music — performance focus; prepares for professional vocal performance career. 4. Vocal Music Teacher Certification — leads to Oklahoma K–12 teaching licensure in vocal music. 5. Music Industry — music business, recording, production, arts administration. ENSEMBLES: Pride of Tigerland Marching Band — performs at Norris Field for some of southeastern Oklahoma's largest audiences; supports ECU Athletics; showcases at high school exhibitions and competitions; hosts the Tigerpalooza Marching Contest each fall. Kevin Feuerborn Band Scholarship available for current members. ECU Chorale — 'internationally ranked'; tours regionally, nationally, and internationally. Steve Walker Music Scholarship available for travel expenses. ECU Wind Ensemble; ECU Brass Band; Showtime Show Choir (cross-disciplinary; music and theatre); Jazz Band (select; audition-based; 3–5 concerts/year on and off campus; styles from classic big band to fusion, bebop, rock, pop); Percussion Ensemble; Chamber Ensemble. ANNUAL EVENTS: Solo Contest (Ataloa Theatre); Faculty Showcase Concert (Ataloa Theatre; free and open to public); Band Concert; Jazz Band Concert; Percussion Ensemble Concert; Choral Concert; Chamber Ensemble Concert. STIPENDS: Band and choir each award substantial stipends to participants based on the vocal or instrumental needs of the ensembles. These stipends may be renewed. IMPORTANT: MUSIC STIPENDS ARE BASED ON PARTICIPATION AND DO NOT AFFECT OTHER FORMS OF FINANCIAL AID.
