About this program

Earlham College's Theatre Arts program is housed in the Center for Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA). Chair: Lynne Perkins Socey (MFA, Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory; AEA member; perkily@earlham.edu; 765.983.1471). Additional faculty include Mia Slayton (costume design) and Jeff Templeton. The curriculum spans acting, directing, design, technical theatre, theatre history, dramatic literature, playwriting, and devised performance. Students perform and design from their very first year — the programme believes in immediate, total immersion in production. Every student must work on both sides of the production process throughout their training. ETC (Earlham Theatre Collective) produces 4–6 mainstage productions per year across two venues: the McDaniel Studio Theatre (125-seat black box, flexible) and the CVPA proscenium (350-seat). The programme runs 24-Hour Theatre each semester — an intensive, time-limited playmaking event in which scripts are written, rehearsed, and performed within 24 hours — and takes students annually to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland. Earlham participates consistently in KCACTF Region 3. Earlham's Quaker culture emphasises collaboration, consensus, and creative risk-taking. Small class sizes (approximately 40–50 majors) ensure every student receives mentorship and production opportunities every semester. SCHOLARSHIPS: Rariden Scholarship: $5,000/year; awarded to an Indiana-resident student interested in a visual or performing arts area; competitive; awarded through Admissions. Theatre Arts Scholarships: $1,000–$2,500/year; auditions organised by the Admissions Office and held in February; scholarship recipients must join an ensemble each semester in residence; must be declared or intended theatre major. Lesson Scholarships: covers lesson fee for one semester; renewable each semester by application. Janica Zuck Richards Memorial Playwriting Award: for student playwrights in the programme.
