BA in Music
Earlham College — Richmond, IN
About this program
Earlham's Music program operates under the principle that 'all musics are worthy of study.' Housed in the Center for Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), which includes Lingle Music Hall (250-seat recital hall; opened 2014), acoustically isolated practice rooms, and teaching studios with Steinway pianos. FIVE CONCENTRATIONS: 1. Performance: Expert applied instrumental and voice instruction; applied lessons; large and small ensemble participation; senior recital required. 2. Composition: Students compose original works throughout the degree; a portfolio of compositions is required by end of the sophomore year. Students should begin composing immediately upon enrollment. Faculty: Wenbin Lyu (Advanced Composition). 3. Ethnomusicology: One of the strongest undergraduate ethnomusicology offerings in the United States — described as 'unique for undergraduate programmes.' Concentration founded by Marc Benamou (NEH grant recipient; author of Rasa: Affect and Intuition in Javanese Musical Aesthetics, Oxford University Press; founded CVPA's Javanese Gamelan programme in 2004; benamom@earlham.edu). 4. Music Education Preparation: Prepares students for graduate study in music education and teaching. Features a 3+1 BA+MAT pathway: students complete three years at Earlham and one year at a partner institution to earn both a BA in Music and an MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching), enabling teacher licensure in music — effectively a master's degree in four academic years. 5. Music Technology: 'Computer musicians get significant hands-on experience with many technologies.' Special emphasis on creating new works for interactive live performance. Students train with Moog and Eurorack analog synthesis systems, Ableton Live, and MAX/MSP. Faculty: Chris Rogan (Music Technology).
