BM in Music Education
Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania — Bloomsburg, PA
About this program
Commonwealth University's BM in Music Education is accredited by NASM, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education), and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Completion of the program prepares students to teach both vocal and instrumental music at the kindergarten through high school levels in Pennsylvania and, through reciprocity, in other states. Both the Bloomsburg and Mansfield campuses have a rich tradition of training and preparing music educators and comprehensive musicians for leadership positions in diverse educational communities. Students participate in the full range of music coursework — applied lessons, ensembles, music theory, aural skills, music history, class piano — held to the same performance standards as BM Performance students. Alongside this, music education faculty work with students every semester as they develop into stronger teachers through PreK–12 field teaching on campus and in area schools throughout the program, culminating in a student teaching semester in the senior year. At Mansfield, Dr. Amelia Garbisch (music education, voice) leads music education coursework alongside the broader applied and ensemble faculty. Mansfield voice students have earned recognition at the regional NATS auditions (Allegheny Mountain Chapter, 2024), and the program received a $300,000 gift from the trust of Edith Johnson '50 to support music students at Mansfield.
