BA in Theatre
College of Charleston — Charleston, SC
About this program
The College of Charleston's BA in Theatre is a liberal arts degree with five concentrations: **Performance**, **Theatre Studies**, **Theatre for Young Audiences**, **Costume Design & Technology**, and **Scenic and Lighting Design & Technology** (Design concentrations excluded). No audition is required for any BA Theatre concentration. The BA is ideal for double majoring — students have combined theatre with biology, communications, business, international studies, and more. The Performance concentration provides acting, voice, movement, and production training for performance careers and graduate study. Theatre Studies develops theatre theory, history, criticism, playwriting, and dramaturgy skills. Theatre for Young Audiences prepares students for educational and community theatre. Students are integrated into the artistic community from the first semester, with productions and major-level classes available immediately. The season includes drama, comedy, and musical theatre staged at the Emmett Robinson Theatre (200-seat proscenium), two black box theatres, and the historic Sottile Theatre (785-seat, 1927). A junior/senior capstone-style project (semester or year-long) develops in-depth work in the student's area of concentration. The annual NYC Showcase presents graduating seniors to agents and casting directors. The **Talent Award Day** (via Acceptd) gives incoming first-year and transfer students the opportunity to audition or submit a portfolio for departmental scholarship consideration — this is not required for program admission. The **Musical Theatre Certificate** (24 credit hours, launched 2023-24) is available as an add-on to the BA in Theatre, providing supplemental vocal technique, musicianship, acting, and dance coursework with access to CofC Stages productions, CofC Opera productions, Broadway Ensemble, and Musical Theatre Workshop. CofC Stages Artistic Director: Janine McCabe. The Department of Theatre and Dance is housed in the Cato Center for the Arts (100,000 sq ft); additional performance venues include the historic Sottile Theatre (785-seat, downtown Charleston, 1927).
