BA in Dance

College of Charleston — Charleston, SC

BADanceCharleston, SC

About this program

The College of Charleston's BA in Dance offers two concentrations: **Dance Studies** and **Performance & Choreography**. Dance Studies is open enrollment. Performance & Choreography requires an audition at one of the EAI Days (held in November and January) and placement testing in technique. Both concentrations ground students in ballet and modern dance technique, with additional offerings in kinesiology, non-Western dance, choreography, body conditioning, contact improvisation, and more. Students have performance opportunities in the CofC Stages season from the first semester. All dance majors may perform and work in the historic Sottile Theatre (785-seat). Each spring, students have the opportunity to choreograph and present their own work in the annual spring dance concert. A junior/senior capstone-style project (semester or year-long) deepens work in the student's concentration. **Dancing Across Europe** is a faculty-organized study abroad program; SOTA travel scholarships are available. The Department connects students to Spoleto Festival USA internships (annual international festival) and Piccolo Spoleto Festival opportunities throughout the spring. Dance Alliance offers free masterclasses by regional professional dance companies and informal performance opportunities. The **Musical Theatre Certificate** (24 credit hours) is available as an add-on for BA Dance students. Auditions for technique placement and acceptance into Performance & Choreography concentration are held during EAI Days. No audition for Dance Studies.
