Cleveland State University's BA in Theatre Arts is a liberal arts degree designed for students who have identified theatre as their primary academic and vocational focus. Three concentrations are available: **Acting**, **Directing**, and **Design/Technical Theatre** (the latter excluded from this database). No audition is required to declare the major; production auditions, scholarship consideration, and certain courses do involve audition processes. CSU's Theatre and Dance Department is a resident company of Playhouse Square, the nation's second-largest performing arts district. Productions are staged in the Allen Theatre Complex — the same professional venues used by Cleveland Play House and Broadway touring productions — giving students access to three state-of-the-art stages. Theatre majors receive complimentary tickets to all Cleveland Play House regular season productions, and discounted access to all Playhouse Square events year-round. The curriculum covers acting technique, theatre history, dramaturgy, voice and movement, and production design, all rooted in a liberal arts context and reinforced by professional-grade training. Faculty are working professionals with extensive experience in the field. Each academic year the department produces three mainstage shows and at least one workshop production. Auditions and crew positions are open to all members of the student body regardless of class standing and major status, with color-conscious inclusive casting as departmental practice. Theatre majors have mandatory weekly service hours and monthly Majors Meetings (M3) as professional development components. Scholarships are available for Acting, Directing, Design/Technical Theatre, and Academic Achievement — all for Theatre Arts majors with a minimum 3.0 GPA in good standing with the department.
