BA in Theatre Arts
California State University-Stanislaus — Turlock, CA
About this program
California State University, Stanislaus offers a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts through the Department of Theatre Arts in the College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The program is production-oriented and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST). The department's core philosophy is learning by doing — students who want to work onstage or backstage are placed at the center of an active, hands-on training environment from their first semester. The curriculum covers the full spectrum of theatrical practice, including acting techniques, directing, scenic design, lighting design, sound design, costume design, technical skills (carpentry, rigging, sewing, painting, makeup), ensemble dynamics, improvisation, storytelling, theatre history, and script analysis. All students receive training in multiple areas of theatre rather than being siloed into a single track, producing versatile graduates prepared for the professional field, education, community theatre, drama therapy, scriptwriting, directing, and graduate study. The department produces six shows per year, including the beloved annual Shakespeare Under the Stars outdoor production and the annual children's show. Students have opportunities to work with professional guest artists and faculty in all aspects of theatre production. The department participates in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), giving students exposure to regional collegiate theatre competition and networking. Graduate career destinations include professional theatre, theatre education, community and children's theatre, drama therapy, scriptwriting, directing, and graduate studies in theatre. Recent alumni have gone on to work at Stanislaus State itself, Merced College, Prospect Theatre Project, Gallo Center for the Performing Arts, Modesto Junior College, Marin Theatre Company, Allenberry Playhouse, and Center Stage Conservatory. A Theatre Arts minor is also available for non-majors. Students pursuing the Liberal Studies BA may elect to complete a concentration in Theatre as part of their preparation for a Multiple Subject Credential.
