BA in Music

California State University-Stanislaus — Turlock, CA

BAMusicTurlock, CA

About this program

California State University, Stanislaus offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music through the Department of Music in the College of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The BA provides a humanistic approach to the study of music as a significant part of human tradition and culture. As a liberal arts curriculum, the BA is not intended as vocational preparation in the way the BM is, though many career and graduate opportunities are available to graduates. The BA is offered with two emphasis areas. The General Music emphasis is designed to provide a foundation in music theory, history, and literature alongside a broad overview of music through a variety of elective courses. Students develop a well-rounded musical education suited to careers in music education, community music, music industry, and graduate study in musicology, music history, or music education. The Music Technology emphasis prepares students to work with the tools and processes of contemporary music production. Students assemble an electronic portfolio of representative work including MIDI production, audio recording, engineering, mixing, mastering, and post-production. Students in this emphasis also gain hands-on experience by serving as recording technicians for Music Department events. All BA students take foundational coursework in music theory, music history, music literature, and applied performance (private lessons or ensemble). Students participate in large and small performing ensembles throughout their degree. The BA does not require a formal senior recital, though students may present one as part of their applied lesson work. All music majors at CSU Stanislaus benefit from the department's outstanding facilities, including the Bernell and Flora Snider Recital Hall — a state-of-the-art performing venue with excellent acoustics and professional recording technology — and the Music Technology Lab, a ten-station Macintosh computer lab equipped with Pro Tools, Sibelius, and other professional digital audio software. The department's instrument collection includes a Steinway concert grand piano and a Dowd harpsichord housed in Snider Recital Hall, along with a variety of Steinway, Mason and Hamlin, Kawai, and Boston pianos throughout the Music Building. The campus is situated in Turlock, within travel distance of Modesto, Stockton, Fresno, Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, and the Bay Area, giving students access to a rich array of professional cultural events that complement their academic and performance training.
