BA in Theatre
California State University-Sacramento — Sacramento, CA
About this program
California State University, Sacramento offers a BA in Theatre through the NAST-accredited Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Letters. The program provides a broad and thorough foundation of the history, theory, literature, and practice of theatre for students pursuing postgraduate study or professional careers. The curriculum challenges students to be independent thinkers and equips them to make collaborative artistic efforts that reflect a richly diverse global perspective, guided by faculty with national and international professional experience. Theatre majors receive in-depth training in acting, voice, movement, audition technique, scenic design, lighting design, costume design, history, literature, criticism, multicultural theatre, musical theatre, puppetry, and film studies. Students engage in both studio coursework and hands-on production work. The department offers four to six faculty-directed productions per season plus a variety of additional student-directed one-acts, recruitment shows, playwrights' theatre works, and community outreach performances. Students are assigned production roles as stage managers, designers, and technicians in addition to performance opportunities, developing broad theatrical knowledge and experience. The department participates annually in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), providing students with regional and national competitive opportunities. Notable student organizations include the Dramatist Society, one of Sac State's most active performing arts clubs, which hosts the annual Sacademy Awards, coordinates theatre outings, sponsors student productions, and runs community education programs. The Sons/Ancestors Players is one of the oldest African American theatre groups west of the Mississippi, having won local, regional, and national awards, and was the first African American theatre group to perform at the Kennedy Center in conjunction with KCACTF. A Musical Theatre minor is also offered through the department, though Musical Theatre is not available as a stand-alone degree. At the graduate level, the department co-administers an MFA in Television, Film & Theatre with the Department of Television, Film & Media Studies.
