BA in Dance
California State University-Sacramento — Sacramento, CA
About this program
California State University, Sacramento offers a BA in Dance through the NAST-accredited Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Letters. Located in Sacramento, California's state capital, the department provides a broad and thorough foundation of the theory, history, literature, and practice of dance for students pursuing postgraduate study or professional careers. The program is characterized by an intersectional and interdisciplinary approach to dance education, challenging students to be independent thinkers and collaborative artists who reflect a richly diverse global perspective. Dance majors receive in-depth training in dance technique, performance, production, choreography, theory, dance history, and dance education. Beginning with basic principles of dance technique, the curriculum refines skills through the choreographic and theoretic processes, culminating in full-scale concert productions. Dance styles taught include contemporary, jazz, tap, ballet, and dance cultures from diverse traditions. Courses in dance science and somatics are also offered. Students are involved at every level of the creative process — from creating and performing choreography to designing and implementing production and promotional aspects of concerts. The department is home to several notable student organizations with performance opportunities beyond the classroom. The Dance Alliance at Sac State provides dance classes, hosts master classes taught by professional companies, and funds students to attend dance conferences and expand the dance community in Sacramento. The Black Dance Collective (BDC) is steeped in the traditions of Katherine Dunham, Pearl Primus, Alvin Ailey, and Geoffrey Holder, exploring African-derived movement and culture within the context of American modern dance. The Sacramento/Black Art of Dance (S/BAD) company was founded in 1991 by Professor Emerita Dr. Linda Goodrich and carries on the tradition of Black Concert dance in America in the style of Katherine Dunham. Dance majors also have the opportunity to collaborate with theatre students on departmental productions.
