BM in Instrumental Performance
California State University-Long Beach — Long Beach, CA
About this program
California State University, Long Beach offers the Bachelor of Music through the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music (BCCM) — the university's dedicated conservatory-model school of music within the College of the Arts. Named in honor of a $16.4 million endowment from the estate of Robert "Bob" Cole, the BCCM is widely recognized as one of the finest music programs in the CSU system and in the Western United States. The conservatory offers the BM with a concentration in Performance with options in Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, Piano/Keyboard, Strings, Voice/Opera, and Jazz. Students may also pursue BM concentrations in Composition and Music Education. The BM Instrumental Performance is a professional degree designed for students pursuing careers as performing musicians, studio teachers, and candidates for advanced graduate study. All BM students receive private studio instruction each semester from dedicated area faculty who are active professional performers. The conservatory's ensembles are among the finest in the nation, and students perform in major concerts throughout the academic year in ensembles including the Bob Cole Conservatory Symphony, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Combos, and various chamber ensembles. The BCCM's Daniel Recital Hall and the Carpenter Performing Arts Center serve as the primary performance venues. Area directors by instrument specialty: Brass — Rob Frear (rob.frear@csulb.edu); Jazz (Instrumental) — Jeff Jarvis (jeff.jarvis@csulb.edu); Jazz (Vocal) — Christine Guter (christine.guter@csulb.edu); Keyboard — Shun-Lin Chou (sam.chou@csulb.edu); Percussion — Ted Atkatz (ted.atkatz@csulb.edu); Strings — Moni Simeonov (moni.simeonov@csulb.edu); Voice — Alexander Hahn (alexander.hahn@csulb.edu); Woodwinds — Jenni Olson (jennifer.olson@csulb.edu). All applicants to the BCCM must first apply to the university through Cal State Apply, then submit a separate conservatory application through the BCCM's Prospective Student Application Form. A two-phase audition process applies: all applicants submit a video prescreen first; those who pass are invited to in-person auditions held in February (for fall entry) or October (for spring transfer entry). Scheduling an audition does not substitute for applying to the university, and applying to the university and selecting "Music" does not guarantee admission as a music major — the conservatory admission is a separate process.
