BA in Theatre Arts (General)

California State University-Long Beach — Long Beach, CA

BATheatre (General)Long Beach, CA

About this program

California State University, Long Beach offers a BA in Theatre Arts through the Department of Theatre Arts within the College of the Arts. Located in Long Beach in the heart of Southern California, CSULB's theatre program prepares students for careers in theatre, film and television, education, live entertainment, and events through broad exposure to highly transferable skills in the dramatic arts. The department offers the BA in Theatre Arts in three pathways: the general BA in Theatre Arts, the BA in Theatre Arts — Technical Theatre: Scenery/Costume/Lighting Design Option, and the BA in Theatre Arts — Performance: Acting Option. The general BA is the broadest of the three paths and is appropriate for students who want exposure across the full range of theatrical disciplines rather than concentrating in one area. All three options share the same admission process — no audition is required for any of the three — and all students are eligible to participate in the same production organizations and extracurricular opportunities. The general BA curriculum spans Acting, Technical and Design Crafts, Theatre History, Literature and Criticism, Directing, and Playwriting. Students work alongside faculty who are active national and international professionals specializing in Acting, Design, Movement, Directing, Voice, Theatre History, Stage Management, and Theatre Management. Production organizations at CSULB include two primary paths. The California Repertory Company (CalRep) is the department's professionally modeled main stage production company, producing multiple works each season. Theatre Threshold is the student-run theatre company, which produces its own work and provides student-led creative opportunities in directing, design, and performance. Both organizations are open to all majors — general BA students may direct, design, act, and assist in all areas. The department also hosts the Student Association of Theatre Arts (SATA). Facilities include the University Theatre, Studio Theatre, and Player's Theatre, along with multiple rehearsal spaces and design labs. CSULB also offers the MFA/MBA in Theatre Management at the graduate level — a combined degree preparing students for careers leading professional theatre organizations.
