BA in Theatre,
Western Washington University — Bellingham, WA
About this program
Western Washington University's BA in Theatre Arts is grounded in the liberal arts and provides comprehensive training in theatre and its role in human development. The program offers multiple specializations including Acting, Dramatic Writing, Educational Theatre, Technical Theatre, Theatre Management, Stage Management, Costume Design, Lighting Design, and Scenic Design. Students benefit from a curriculum that emphasizes both traditional theatre training and innovative approaches like devising—a collaborative process of creating new work for the stage. Western has received 6 National Awards from the Kennedy Center for devised productions. The program uniquely includes an introduction to playwriting class and trains students to be self-generative artists. Faculty are professional educators (not graduate students) who focus exclusively on undergraduate education, and most classes feature low student-to-faculty ratios. Students gain hands-on experience designing and stage managing departmental productions in both the black box DUG Theater and the 1,100-seat Mainstage Theater.
