About this program
The Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts at Virginia Tech is offered through the School of Performing Arts (SOPA) within the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design. The theatre arts program provides a comprehensive education in theatre within the context of a broad liberal arts course of study. The curriculum emphasizes the theoretical, the historical, and the practical, providing a foundation in dramatic literature, theatre and film history, play-writing, and production. Advanced courses are available in acting, scene and costume design, lighting, theatre production, and cinema studies and production. The Theatre program offers three different options for the student’s individual focus: Theatre General, Theatre Design and Technology, and Theatre Performance. State of the art facilities give students access to innovative technologies and a wide range of support and opportunities encourage double majors and cross-disciplinary work. The department produces between 12 and 18 theatre pieces annually, led by practicing artists/teachers. Students are encouraged to become involved in all areas of production. NAST-accredited.
