BA in Theatre and Performance Studies

University of Missouri-Columbia — Columbia, MO

BATheatre (General)Columbia, MO

About this program

The University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Theatre offers a BA in Theatre and Performance Studies that integrates rigorous liberal arts education with specialized training in theatre arts. The program is built around the study of the produced play—past, present, and future—and emphasizes both theatrical scholarship and hands-on performance and production work. Students complete 18 credits of core courses covering theatre history, script analysis, production workshops, and scenic or costume construction, then choose one of three emphasis areas: Performance (acting and directing), Design/Technical Theatre, or Writing for Performance. The curriculum develops critical thinking and communication skills while preparing students for professional theatre careers or graduate studies. The department operates multiple performance venues including the Rhynsburger Theatre and Corner Playhouse, and students regularly participate in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, earning recognition in acting, playwriting, design, and dramaturgy. Graduates pursue careers in professional theatre, film, television, and arts administration, or continue their training in graduate programs.
