About this program

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Department of Theatre offers an intensive professional BFA curriculum with nine concentrations: Acting, Arts & Entertainment Technology, Costume Design & Technology, Lighting Design & Technology, Scenic Design, Scenic Technology, Sound Design & Technology, Stage Management, and Theatre Studies. Located in the College of Fine & Applied Arts and serving as a Resident Producing Organization at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, the program provides rigorous training for students pursuing careers in theatre and allied arts. The program admits approximately 40 students annually and requires both academic eligibility and talent evaluation through auditions or portfolio reviews. The Theatre Studies concentration offers flexibility for students exploring multiple facets of theatre or preparing for advanced training in directing, dramaturgy, playwriting, arts management, and theatre history. All students complete production crew assignments at the Krannert Center and work alongside resident theatre professionals and visiting artists. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical application, with graduates expected to demonstrate mature analytical and creative abilities, practical methodologies, and skills for entry-level positions in the theatre field.
