About this program

The University of Galway (formerly NUI Galway) is a public research-led university founded in 1845, located on the west coast of Ireland in the vibrant city of Galway — Ireland's cultural capital and a UNESCO Creative City of Film. Approximately 18,000 students are enrolled. The university is ranked in the top 100 in the world in Performing Arts (QS 2024). It has a particularly distinguished connection to Irish theatre through its alumni and institutional partnerships: the co-founders of Druid Theatre, Garry Hynes and Marie Mullen, are Galway graduates — both are Tony Award winners (Hynes for direction, Mullen for acting in Dancing at Lughnasa) — and The New York Times has described Druid as "one of the world's great theatre companies." The university now runs the Druid Academy programme in partnership with Druid. Additional formal partnerships include the Abbey Theatre (Ireland's national theatre), the Gate Theatre, the Galway International Arts Festival, Fishamble, ANU, Landmark Productions, and many others. The O'Donoghue Center for Drama, Theatre and Performance is the dedicated hub for drama study on campus, adjacent to the Bank of Ireland Theatre. EU/Irish applicants apply via the CAO (cao.ie). Non-EU international applicants apply via the University of Galway's online application portal (opens October each year). The Creative Arts Performance Points Scheme awards up to 40 additional CAO points to applicants who demonstrate exceptional national-level achievement in drama/theatre, music, or other creative arts. EU fees: approximately €3,000-4,000/year (confirm at universityofgalway.ie); international: confirm at universityofgalway.ie.
