BA in Theatre
University of Detroit Mercy — Detroit, MI
About this program
The University of Detroit Mercy is a private Catholic university — the only Jesuit and Sisters of Mercy university in the United States — in Detroit, Michigan, enrolling approximately 5,000 students on the McNichols campus. Founded through the merger of the University of Detroit (Jesuit, 1877) and Mercy College of Detroit (Sisters of Mercy, 1941), UDM combines the intellectual traditions of both congregations. The Department of Performing Arts and its producing organization Detroit Mercy Theatre Company (DMTC) has been an established and respected member of the Detroit theatre community since 1972. DMTC opened a new Black Box Theatre on the McNichols campus, marking a major milestone in its growth. UDM is particularly notable for its apprenticeship-based pedagogy: students work alongside professional guest artists and faculty who maintain dynamic partnerships with theatres throughout Detroit and the region. DMTC has received recognition at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Region 3, including national award wins. Notable alumni include Emmy-winning actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele). Tuition: approximately $44,000/year (verify at udmercy.edu). The Distinguished Artist Scholarship Competition offers 100% full-tuition for outstanding performing arts students.
