About this program
UC Santa Cruz is a research university set in 2,000 acres of redwood forest overlooking Monterey Bay, consistently ranked among the world's top research universities. Founded in 1965, it enrolls approximately 19,000 students in Santa Cruz, California — a coastal community known for its progressive arts culture, scenic setting, and proximity to the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Both the Music Department and the Department of Performance, Play & Design are within the Arts Division. The Music Department has a distinctive identity in experimental contemporary music, DMA composition, and jazz improvization. In 2023, the Theater Arts Department merged with the Art and Design: Games & Playable Media Program to form the new Department of Performance, Play & Design (PPD) — a unique interdisciplinary combination of theater, dance, and interactive media/game design. No audition is required for any undergraduate degree at UCSC. California resident tuition ~$14,400/year; nonresident ~$43,900/year.
