About this program
The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is a comprehensive research university in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, founded in 1966. It enrolls approximately 35,000 students and is ranked among Canada's top five research universities. The School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) is housed within the Faculty of Arts and comprises three divisions: Dance, Drama, and Music. The SCPA is based in the Craigie and Social Sciences buildings on UCalgary's main campus and performs across multiple venues including the University Theatre, Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Boris Roubakine Recital Hall, Cenovus Energy Great Hall, Reeve Theatre, and Wagonstage Theatre. The UCalgary String Quartet has been the university's quartet-in-residence since 1995. Music ensembles include the Jazz Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Brass & Percussion Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, World Music Ensemble, and Jazz Combos. SCPA presents an active season of over 60 events annually including mainstage productions, student showcases, the 48th-annual Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition (one of Canada's most prestigious), and the Movement Research Festival (MoRF). The Dance Division has strong links with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (DJD) Calgary and exchange partnerships with Trinity Laban (London), Beijing Dance Academy, and partner universities in Guinea, Helsinki, and Poland. A unique collaborative agreement with Mount Royal University's Conservatory allows BMus or MMus students to simultaneously complete the Advanced Performance Program (APP) for enhanced performance training. Domestic Canadian tuition is approximately CAD $7,700/year; international students approximately CAD $28,000–31,000/year (confirm current rates at ucalgary.ca).
