About this program
The University of Alberta is a public research university founded in 1908 and located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is one of Canada's leading research universities, with approximately 40,000 students and a faculty recognized nationally and internationally. The Faculty of Arts is home to both the Department of Music and the Department of Drama, both located in the Fine Arts Building (FAB) on the main campus. The Department of Music occupies Rooms 1–98 of the FAB and its principal performance venue is Convocation Hall (capacity ~650), a historic 1913 sandstone building at the heart of campus with exceptional acoustics. Additional performance facilities include Convocation Hall's Organ, the University Symphony Orchestra (USO) rehearsal hall (FAB 1-23), the Symphonic Wind Ensemble rehearsal space, and numerous faculty studios and practice rooms. The Department of Music has been a center of classical training and musical research for over 75 years; it is accredited by the Canadian Association of Music Schools (CAMS). The Department of Drama was established in 1945 — it offered Canada's first BFA Acting, Design, Directing, and Playwriting programs — and its productions have been part of Edmonton's theatre community since 1949. Drama performances take place in the Timms Center for the Arts, which houses the Maclab Theatre (mainstage) and the Studio Theatre (black box), and in the Fine Arts Building's Second Playing Space. Alberta domestic tuition is approximately CAD $6,300 per year; international tuition approximately CAD $29,000–$33,000 per year. Merit and entrance scholarships are widely available through the Faculty of Arts, the department, and the province.
