About this program

The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is a public research university and the flagship campus of the University of Alaska system, founded in 1917 and located in Fairbanks, Alaska. Situated on the traditional lands of the Ch'eno Xwut'ana (Dena) people of the lower Tanana River, UAF enrolls approximately 8,000 students and is classified as a Doctoral University. The College of Liberal Arts houses both the Department of Music and the Department of Theatre & Film, which share the Fine Arts Complex. The Fine Arts Complex includes the Charles Davis Concert Hall, the Lee H. Salisbury Theatre (mainstage), and the Salisbury Lab Theatre (black box), plus music studios, rehearsal rooms, the Media Lab (music notation and video editing software), practice rooms, and a piano laboratory. The Department of Music is NASM-accredited and holds a deeply unique position in Alaska's cultural life: the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra is simultaneously a professional community orchestra and a UAF for-credit large ensemble, giving music students direct professional orchestral experience. Other cooperative arts groups include Opera Fairbanks, Fairbanks Light Opera Theater, Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, and the Summer Music Academy. The Department of Theatre & Film operates under the FLPA (Film and Performing Arts) curriculum framework, integrating stage and screen work, Indigenous media, and production design. It maintains the FRAME (Film Reel Alaska Mentoring Experience) professional film program and partnered with Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre, Fairbanks Drama Association, and Perseverance Theatre. UAF in-state tuition is approximately $7,400 per year ; out-of-state approximately $22,100. The Alaska Performance Scholarship and UA Scholars Program provide significant state-funded aid to Alaska residents.
