About this program
The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is a public, open-access research university established in 1954, located in Anchorage, Alaska. As Alaska's largest university, UAA enrolls approximately 14,000 students across its Anchorage campus and affiliated community campuses (Kenai Peninsula College, Kodiak College, Matanuska-Susitna College, and Prince William Sound College). UAA sits on the ancestral lands of the Dena'ina, Ahtna, Alutiiq/Sugpiaq, and Eyak/dAXunhyuu Peoples. The Department of Music is housed in the Fine Arts Building (ARTS) alongside the UAA Recital Hall — one of the best performance venues in Anchorage. NASM-accredited since the 1990s, the Department of Music offers over 150 performances per year and has deep ties to major Anchorage arts organizations including the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, Anchorage Concert Chorus (artistic director: Department Chair Dr. Grant Cochran), Anchorage Opera, Anchorage Festival of Music, and Alaska Jazz Workshop. UAA was named a 2021 Yamaha Institution of Excellence for innovation in music study. The Department of Theatre and Dance presents mainstage productions in the UAA Mainstage Theatre and Harper Theatre (both in the Fine Arts Building) and maintains active partnerships with Perseverance Theatre, Alaska Theatre of Youth, Sitka Music Festival, Pulse Dance Company, and Momentum Dance Collective. UAA is an open-access institution — no audition is required for admission to the university. In-state tuition is approximately $7,500 per year ; out-of-state approximately $21,000. The Alaska Performance Scholarship and UA Scholars Program provide substantial state-funded aid to Alaska residents.
