The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a public research university in Birmingham, Alabama, founded in 1969. Enrolling approximately 23,000 students, UAB is consistently ranked as a top research university nationally and is one of only 32 members of the Association of American Universities (AAU) that focuses primarily on undergraduate education as well as research. UAB is located in the heart of Birmingham, a major medical, arts, and cultural hub. The Department of Theatre is housed in the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center — a 1,300-seat state-of-the-art performance venue that also serves as the home of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Theatre UAB productions are staged in the Morris K. Sirote Theatre and the Odess Theatre, both within the Alys Stephens Center. Birmingham's Red Mountain Theatre, one of Alabama's premier professional musical theatre companies, offers UAB Theatre students performance and internship opportunities. The Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) and housed in Hulsey Center. The Jemison Concert Hall (in the Alys Stephens Center) serves as UAB's primary concert venue.
