About this program

The Crane School of Music is one of the United States' most distinguished conservatories — housed at the State University of New York at Potsdam in Potsdam, New York, in a rural village setting near the Canadian border. Founded in 1886, Crane has one of the world's oldest and largest music teacher education programmes, and is the only All-Steinway school in the SUNY system. In 2021, Crane was named one of only ten Yamaha Institution of Excellence programmes nationally. The school enrolls approximately 475 students with approximately 75 faculty and staff, yielding a 7:1 student-faculty ratio. Life at Crane includes more than 300 recitals, lectures, and concerts each year by faculty, students, and guests. The Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall (1,290 seats), Sara M. Snell Music Theatre (452 seats), and Ralph Wakefield Lecture and Recital Hall provide exceptional performance venues. The Crane Opera Ensemble has been presenting fully staged productions since 1924 and has earned national awards. The school completed a $29 million renovation and expansion in 2022. Crane offers BM degrees in Music Education, Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance, Music Business, Musical Studies (theory/history/composition), and a BA in Music. The MusB in Music Education programme boasts an extraordinary 100% job placement rate.
