About this program

The Bachelor of Music in Performance (BMP) at Texas Baptist College — the undergraduate college of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) — is a comprehensive music degree that trains students to be musically and artistically excellent while being faithful to the Scriptures. Preparing students for broad kingdom impact, this program is supported by a track in general and theological studies. Graduates of the BMP are developed musicians who can utilize their talent to serve and lead in concert halls, mission settings, churches, or schools. Students choose an applied concentration in voice, piano, or guitar. All students in the School of Church Music and Worship are required to minister in the music program of a local church or organization during the time they are enrolled in their degree programs. Students who successfully complete this degree may choose to continue their preparation at the graduate level in music performance or church music. The School of Church Music and Worship was founded in 1915 (originated as the Department of Gospel Music — the first Southern Baptist seminary to offer church music training) and offers more than ten unique degrees, all designed to provide theological and practical foundations for any field of ministry. A unique feature of Southwestern's music degrees is the combination of in-depth theological studies with training for musical excellence. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary is one of the largest Baptist theological seminary institutes in the world. President: Dr. David S. Dockery (10th president; elected April 19, 2023). Dean of School of Church Music and Worship: Leo Day (named 2013, when the BMP and BMWS were introduced in fall 2015 alongside sixteen full-time music professors). Texas Baptist College and SWBTS are NASM-accredited (since 1966).
