About this program

Sonoma State University is a public liberal arts-focused university in Rohnert Park, Sonoma County, California — part of the California State University system, enrolling approximately 5,000 students. SSU is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM, since 1972) and is situated adjacent to the Green Music Centre — a world-class venue featuring the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Hall (1,400-seat), whose breath-taking acoustics have attracted performances by Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Herbie Hancock, Itzhak Perlman, Wynton Marsalis, the Vienna Philharmonic, and many others. The Music Department offers BM degrees in Performance (Instrumental and Vocal), Jazz Studies, Composition, and Music Teacher Preparation, along with a BA in Music (Liberal Arts Emphasis). Admission to all Music degree programmes is by audition only. All ensembles — instrumental, choral, jazz, and chamber — are open to all SSU students regardless of major and perform in Weill Hall and the Schroeder Recital Hall. Student ushers at professional Green Music Centre performances are also paid. Note: SSU's Theatre Arts & Dance Department is currently in teach-out mode and is not accepting new students.
