BFA in Theatre & Performance
Simon Fraser University — Burnaby, British Columbia
About this program
Simon Fraser University's Theatre & Performance program, housed within the School for the Contemporary Arts, is unique as the only program of its kind in Canada. Rather than focusing on traditional theatre or actor training, the curriculum emphasizes experimental performance making, contemporary performance, collaborative methods, original storytelling, new media, and creative research. Students work with the primary materials of performance—time, space, body, text, movement, and social relation—to create unique, aesthetic, and socially engaged live events. The program is guided by faculty of interdisciplinary, working artists including Erika Latta (MFA, Acting, Columbia), James Long (Master of Urban Studies, SFU), and Dr. Ryan Tacata (PhD, Performance Studies, Stanford). Students develop practical, technical, conceptual, and professional skills through rigorous studio experimentation and live performance practice, with opportunities to collaborate across disciplines including Dance, Film, Visual Art, and Music. In their fourth year, students develop a capstone project that is publicly performed in a festival setting attended by creative leaders from across Vancouver. Graduates have pursued diverse careers including acting in film and television, creating performance works that tour internationally, designing video games, teaching at various levels, producing festivals, and establishing theatre companies.
