SF State's tradition of musical excellence dates to 1899, when one of its inaugural courses was Pedagogy of Music. The School of Music is housed in the Creative Arts Building, which includes the McKenna Theatre (701-seat), Knuth Theatre (322-seat), a piano laboratory, choral and instrumental ensemble rehearsal space, and an electronic music laboratory/recording studio. The School of Music offers a BA in Music (humanistic, liberal arts focus) and a BM (intensive professional programme).
