Saint Xavier University is a private Catholic institution in Chicago, Illinois — founded in 1846 by the Sisters of Mercy, it holds the distinction of being Chicago's first Catholic university and the first Mercy institution of higher learning in the world. The university enrols approximately 3,300 students and is nationally recognised as a College of Distinction and Best College for Veterans. The Department of Music is an accredited institutional member of NASM and offers two degree programmes: a BA in Music (with optional emphases in Performance or Jazz/Commercial Music) and a BM in Music Education (Pre-K through Grade 12). Faculty are active professional musicians in the Chicago metropolitan area, including members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, and Elgin Symphony Orchestra. The department features a music lounge, practice rooms with pianos, a computer lab with professional music software, and instrument lockers. Music scholarships of up to $24,000–$28,000 over four years are available. SXU Drama operates as a student extracurricular organisation — there is no standalone undergraduate Theatre degree at Saint Xavier University.
