About this program

Mason Gross School of the Arts (MGSA) is the conservatory of Rutgers University — the flagship public research university of New Jersey — located in New Brunswick and one of America's oldest universities (founded 1766). MGSA offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in dance, design, filmmaking, music, theater, and visual arts, and serves as one of the country's most important public arts conservatories. MGSA is highly selective — only 9% of drama applicants are admitted, making it one of the most competitive public theater programs in the country. The school's overall acceptance rate is 18–21%. MGSA is NASM-accredited for its music programs. New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (NBPAC), opened in 2019 in Civic Square, is the primary performance home for MGSA. Professional companies George Street Playhouse (AEA) and Crossroads Theatre — both housed in the NBPAC — provide MGSA theater students with pathways to AEA Equity cards and professional credits. The Rutgers Conservatory at Shakespeare's Globe in London offers drama students a classical conservatory study abroad experience. BFA and BM degrees are offered through Mason Gross (professional conservatory track; audition required). BA degrees in Music and Dance are available through the School of Arts and Sciences (non-audition, liberal arts track). Sebastian Stan (BFA'05) was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar (The Apprentice) and won the Golden Globe for Male Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy (A Different Man). Music alum Andrew Kosinski (BM'20) recently composed a funeral march for President Jimmy Carter.
