Reed College is a highly selective private liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon, consistently ranked among the most intellectually rigorous and innovative colleges in the United States. Reed operates on a distinctive academic model centered on small seminars, a common first-year humanities course (Humanities 110), extensive faculty mentorship, and a required senior thesis for every student — regardless of major. Reed does not participate in U.S. News & World Report rankings, famously prioritizing academic substance over rankings competition. The performing arts at Reed are housed in the Division of Arts, encompassing the Dance, Theatre, and Music departments, all based in the purpose-built Performing Arts Building. Reed offers four performing arts degrees relevant to PerformrGO: BA in Dance, BA in Dance-Theatre (interdisciplinary), BA in Theatre, and BA in Music. All four are traditional four-year liberal arts BA degrees; no BFA, BM, or conservatory degrees are offered. No audition is required for admission to Reed or for any of the performing arts majors. Private instruction fees for junior and senior music majors are waived. Reed meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all incoming and continuing students, making it one of the most financially supportive schools in the country for lower- and middle-income families. Reed's location in Portland provides direct access to a vibrant arts community including Oregon Ballet Theatre, White Bird Dance, Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, and a thriving independent theatre scene. Faculty collaborate with Portland-based companies and regularly bring visiting artists and scholars to campus. Reed has exchange programs with Lewis & Clark College for dance students.
