BA in Theatre
Randolph-Macon College — Ashland, VA
About this program
Randolph-Macon College (RMC) is a private liberal arts college in Ashland, Virginia — just north of Richmond — with an enrollment of approximately 1,800 undergraduates. Founded in 1830, it is the second-oldest Methodist-run college in the country. The College competes in NCAA Division III as the Yellow Jackets in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Theatre Department at Randolph-Macon offers a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre emphasizing the balance between history, literature, theory, and creating for the stage in a liberal arts context. The program recently opened a brand new, state-of-the-art Center for the Performing Arts — a 19,200-square-foot facility housing the Haun Rehearsal Hall (designed for acoustic excellence), the renovated 630-seat Blackwell Auditorium (which has hosted RMC performances since the 1950s), and the Cobb-Kesler black box theatre. Students participate directly in collaborative theatre-making practices with numerous opportunities for hands-on experiential learning. RMC's production season typically includes three to four shows per academic year with many opportunities for students to work in design, directing, and acting. Auditions and crew calls are open to all students regardless of major. The lively student-run Theatre Arts Group (TAG) provides additional production opportunities. The program emphasizes career preparation — training students not only for theatre careers but also developing collaboration, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills valued across many professions.
