About this program

Northwestern's theatre major prepares well-rounded artists for work on stage, behind the scenes, or teaching the next generation. Students take coursework in acting, stagecraft, and directing, plus classes in scenic, lighting, costume, and sound design. Northwestern calls its program 'theatre with a difference' — an authentic ensemble approach where every role (actor, sound designer, stage manager) is valued, with faith and creativity integrated throughout. Each year the department presents musicals, dramas, comedies, and one-acts — 6+ shows annually. The DeWitt Theatre Arts Center has been described as the best college theatre facility in Iowa by a visiting executive director of the Iowa High School Speech Association. It contains two performance areas: the Theora England Willcox Theatre (proscenium-style, 196 seats) and the R. Keith Allen Theatre (black box, up to 250 seats). Both are equipped with high-tech acoustical, lighting, and mechanical systems. The center also includes a scenery studio, costume studio, makeup and dressing rooms, a green room, faculty and staff offices, classrooms, a design studio, a box office, and a spacious lobby.
