About this program
Middlebury Theatre is built on the principle of the "artist-scholar," where students immerse themselves in all aspects of theatre making while rigorously studying theatre's histories, theories, practices, and literatures. The program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that balances the study of dramatic literature, history, and theory with hands-on theatre creation. Students explore connections across courses in acting, directing, playwriting, set design, lighting design, and costume design, while also drawing on coursework outside the discipline to provide depth and context. As part of a liberal arts setting, the department aims to be an artistic home where students reimagine traditional distinctions and become innovators and collaborators capable of shaping culture through creative and collaborative processes.
