About this program
HWS's BA in Theatre has a mission 'to give students opportunities to make and study theatre with a particular emphasis on how theatre transforms society through sharing spaces, raising voices, and crafting stories.' Three main-stage faculty-directed shows per year. All tickets free (donations accepted). CURRICULUM: Acting, directing, design, technical production, playwriting, theatre history, Black theatre, theatre for social change, Theatre Production (studio-based course open to all students involved in a production). COURSES include: Acting (Stanislavski-based); Acting Shakespeare; Black Theatres (200 years of Black performance in the US, from Harlem Renaissance through Black Arts Movement); Theatre for Social Change (political expression and social justice through theatre); Playwriting. STUDY ABROAD: Shakespearean literature in England; masked performance in Indonesia.
