About this program
Friends University's NASM-accredited music programme offers three degree options, all with audition requirements. THREE MUSIC DEGREES: BM IN PERFORMANCE: Available in vocal and instrumental areas (keyboard, woodwinds, brass, strings, jazz, and percussion). Advanced performance training on primary instrument/voice. BM IN MUSIC EDUCATION: Available in instrumental and vocal music. Two additional concentrations: Jazz concentration — studies in jazz history, theory, arranging, and pedagogy. Music in Worship concentration — practical focus for careers in music and worship ministry. Prepares for K-12 music teaching certification. BA IN MUSIC: Liberal arts degree; includes all core music courses with flexibility for electives and future career options. Multiple career pathways: education; performance; ministry; graduate studies. OPERA AND VOICE PROGRAMME — DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENTS: National Opera Association Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition: THREE CONSECUTIVE national finals appearances (2020, 2021, 2022). NATS West Central Region Competition 2022: More regional finalists than ANY school in Kansas; the most first-place winners (5) of any university in the competition at all levels. Anita George Vocal Scholarship: awarded by audition regardless of degree programme. KEY ENSEMBLES: Singing Quakers (est. 1924): Select 60-voice choir; tours annually across state and region; international tour every four years; 'the oldest musical organisation at Friends University.' Audition after one year of membership in Concert Choir. Conductor: Dr. Rayvon T.J. Moore. Jazz Vocal Ensemble: Select 12-voice ensemble; vocal jazz literature a cappella and accompanied; intensive musicianship, vocal style, and performance skills. Concert Choir + Choral Union (combines Concert Choir and Singing Quakers): Annual Christmas Candlelight concerts and choral-orchestral concerts with Friends University Community Orchestra. Wind Ensemble; Campus Band; Chamber & Symphony Orchestras; Flute Choir; Concert Jazz Band; Conjunto Latino; Soulstice; Jazz combos. DrumLine: Auditioned ensemble; performs at football games; 12 members. ANNUAL JAZZ FESTIVAL: High school students from across Kansas invited to work with leading educators and hear world-class performers. Director: Dr. Nick Schroeder. OPERA/MUSICAL PRODUCTIONS: Music degree students AND qualified non-majors may audition for annual large production plus opera scenes and musical excerpts.
