The Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts (Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main; HfMDK) is the only university of music, drama, and dance in the German state of Hesse. Founded in 1938, it has approximately 900 students taught by about 65 professors and 350 lecturers. THE BAdance IS TAUGHT IN GERMAN AND ENGLISH — making it one of the few undergraduate dance degrees in Germany accessible to English-speaking students who may not have full German fluency. TUITION: As a PUBLIC UNIVERSITY in Germany, HfMDK charges NO tuition fees. The only cost is the semester contribution — currently approximately €324.78 per semester (covers administrative costs and provides access to public transportation). This represents extraordinary value for professional dance training. PROGRAMME MISSION: 'The aim of the Bachelor's degree programme in Dance (BAdance) is the training and individual advancement of creative, expressive dancer personalities who possess a wide range of dance techniques in both the classical and contemporary fields and can apply their qualities with confidence. They have developed the ability to creatively shape artistic work processes and are able to reflect on themselves and the art form of dance in an interdisciplinary as well as in a historical and social context.' CURRICULUM INCLUDES: Ballet technique (placement, execution, strength, flexibility, coordination, expression, presence, musicality, potential). Contemporary dance (placement, rhythm, expression, permeability, dynamics, receptivity, stability, coordination, spatial perception). Contact improvisation; somatics; composition; partnering; capoeira; pointe work; variations; repertory. Dance studies; music theory; applied anatomy. Taught by an 'experienced, international faculty and guest teachers.' PERFORMANCE: 'Students perform new creations by internationally renowned choreographers throughout the academic year and have opportunities to create their own work.' SOCIAL COMMITMENT: 'In the course of their studies, students are encouraged and supported to develop social and political commitment, to contribute to groups in a self-confident and responsible manner and to positively shape group processes.' LOCATION: Frankfurt am Main — Germany's financial capital; close to historic Alte Oper concert hall and Palmengarten botanical garden. Major international airport hub. PRE-SCREEN (online phase): Learn and record specified movement phrases from a YouTube video (publicly available). Registration opens in January and runs through approximately April. Link available throughout the registration period. LIVE AUDITION: Held in Frankfurt am Main in approximately June — check hfmdk-frankfurt.de for current cycle dates. Invitation to live audition based on pre-screen.
